The Kenya Cup enters its third weekend with another set of five fixtures on the card on Saturday 10 December 2011. Strathmore Leos are the early pace-setters, with two wins out of two. We preview the weekend fixtures.
Kenya Commercial Bank RFC v Strathmore Leos
Lions Den, Ruaraka
The last time these two sides met, Strathmore rallied from a 0-12 deficit to beat the bankers 28-12 and lift the 29th edition of the Impala Floodlits in April. They began their campaign with a match day one 21-3 win over Mwamba RFC before upsetting Impala RFC 6-5 in last weekend’s fixture. The Leos will be no pushovers and will be out to register a third successive win as the league begins to take shape.
The bankers, who entered the fray last weekend , registered a narrow 22-17 win over Homeboyz RFC last weekend at the Lions Den and apart from settling scores with the varsity students, will seek to register a comprehensive result against a Strathmore side that continues to grow in stature with every passing moment .
Kisumu RFC v Mean Machine RFC
Kisumu Polytechnic Grounds, Kisumu
Kisumu RFC led Nakuru RFC 10-7 before going down to a 29-10 defeat last weekend at the Nakuru Athletic Club. They play host to a Mean Machine side who were 0-17 losers to reigning league champions Kenya Harlequin FC at the RFUEA Grounds.
The first Kenya Cup match to be played in Kisumu sees the home side face a Mean Machine side who are out to relive their glory days by getting as many positive results as possible during the current campaign.
Kisumu would probably have drawn many positives from last weekend’s encounter against Nakuru, and after correcting their mistakes and backed by home ground advantage, will take the game to Machine.
Machine were not embarrassed in their defeat to Quins and this will be a motivating factor as they play Kisumu, seeking to bag all the points from this fixture.
Impala RFC v Nondescript RUFC
Impala Club, Ngong’ Road, Nairobi
Both sides suffered defeats as they began their Kenya Cup campaign on match day two, Impala falling to a 6-5 loss at the hands of Strathmore Leos while Nondies were 24-5 losers to Mwamba RFC.
Match day three sees these two sides pitted against each other, in pursuit of a win as they seek to navigate their way up the Kenya Cup leaderboard. It’s early days yet but every try, every point, every win counts towards the cumulative points at the end of the season.
Impala did the double over the white shirts, beating them home and away during the 2010-2011 campaign and will relish the opportunity to extend their dominance against a Nondies side who bolstered their squad in the off season, signing amongst others Derrick Wamalwa, Edwin Alubaka and Calvins Biko from KCB as they seek to return to the higher echelons of a league they once dominated in days gone by.
Kenya Harelquin FC v Homeboyz RFC
RFUEA Grounds, Ngong’ Road, Nairobi
Kenya Harlequin FC, the reigning league champions, registered their fourteenth win in fifteen Kenya Cup matches as they began their league defense with a 17-0 win over Mean Machine on Saturday 3 December 2011. They play a Homeboyz RFC side who gave a spirited performance in their 22-17 loss to Kenya Commercial Bank RFC on the same day.
Quins, unbeaten on the way to the Kenya Cup title last season will come into this match seeking to register another result that will keep them ahead of the pack. They will have to contend with a Homeboyz side who will definitely be relishing an upset win after being inspired by their performance last weekend.
Mwamba RFC v Nakuru RFC
Nairobi (Venue to be confirmed)
Mwamba RFC bounced back from a 21-3 defeat to Strathmore on the Kenya Cup’s opening day to register a 24-5 win over Nondies last weekend. They play host to a Nakuru side that rallied to beat Kisumu RFC 29-10 last weekend.
A good start to the season is imperative for both sides, a win is on the mind of both sets of coaching staff. Saturday’s tie could be a competitive fixture as Mwamba would like to maintain the tempo with a second successive win as they seek to improve on last year’s fourth place in the league. For Nakuru, a win away from home will see them stay unbeaten early in the season, giving them the momentum to challenge the pecking order for the overall crown at the close of the season.
All matches kick off at 4.30pm
Action also continues in the Eric Shirley, Nationwide and Universities leagues.
